Wipe the sweat from my brow And do it again Don’t know how But we’ll get there again Remember me now And remember me then It was all in the sounds The sounds of the men Didn’t you see us When we came close? Couldn’t you hear us? You didn’t get close. Why couldn’t you see us? You turned up your nose. Why wouldn’t hear us? Your ears were all closed. And now It’s all over Forever And done You turned it all down Spat on the drunks

about

It's been eight years since Asheq Akhtar composed and released 'The Instrument' under the pseudonym, Suborno.

Similarly jammed full of improvised, home-recorded guitars and noise, 'The Divided Self' can be seen as a companion piece to its predecessor, but it is also markedly different. From the opening bars of ‘Varanasi Parasites’, listeners will find that there are now electric guitars here. Bass guitars, cellos and drums spill out across the album too with guest performances from Bryn Davies (Kyll Valley Players Club), Al Mobbs (Gorillaz), and Paul Newland (The Lowland Hundred).

Since 'The Instrument' was released, there have been significant changes for Asheq including a steady rise in acting, two house moves, and two children to help fill those homes. ‘The Instrument’ involved a trip to both India and Bangladesh, but Asheq has been unable to return to either country since.

Anyone familiar with Asheq's work will know that it is often concerned with cultural identity (specifically related to migration and of being an outlander). ‘The Divided Self’ is an eclectic album - far more so than ‘The Instrument’, which was mostly an experiment inspired by Hallock Hill’s ‘The Union’. 'The Divided Self’ is a more personal and biographical journey than its predecessor.

There are no plans to release a physical version of 'The Divided Self'.

On release, £300 was raised and donated to the Penny Appeal to aid those affected by Cyclone Amphan.

Thank you for listening and supporting.
